Trade with the gifts God has given you
Today we gathered together to celebrate St Hilda’s Day and to honour the legacy of our Patron Saint, Hilda of Whitby. St Hilda was a woman whose life and contributions have left an indelible mark on history, and whose values continue to inspire and guide us at St Hilda’s School.
The famous 8th century historian Bede gave a description of Hilda as an energetic woman who was a skilled teacher. He also said: “All who knew her called her mother because of her outstanding devotion and grace.” It was noted that Hilda was incredibly kind-hearted, and under her leadership the monastery became world renowned for its learning and teachings, so much so that those in the highest power would seek out St Hilda for advice.
In 1912 our Foundation Principal, Miss Catherine Bourne, named our school St Hilda’s and set about ensuring that our identity as a school was built on the solid foundations of the story and spirit of St Hilda. Our school values – Love, Compassion, Forgiveness, Hope and Grace – as well as our Motto – Non Nobis Solum, not for ourselves alone – are reflections of our Patron Saint.
Born in 614, Hilda was a remarkable figure in early medieval England. In a time when women's voices were often marginalised, she rose to prominence, not through conquest or power, but through her profound wisdom, faith, and leadership. Her life offers us invaluable lessons, resonating across the centuries and reminding us of the enduring impact of a life dedicated to service, to learning, and to community.
Hilda’s commitment to learning and intellectual pursuit is a cornerstone of her legacy. As the Abbess of Whitby, she transformed the Abbey into a renowned centre of education and culture. Under her guidance, both men and women were educated—a progressive vision for her time. Hilda believed in the transformative power of education and was a pioneer in fostering a community where learning and spiritual growth were intertwined.
At St Hilda’s School, we strive to emulate this vision. We believe in nurturing the intellectual curiosity of our students and empowering them to explore new ideas and perspectives. Hilda’s example encourages us to create an environment where knowledge is valued, and where every student has the opportunity to shine academically and in the pursuit of their ambitions as a whole person – mind, heart, soul and strength. St Hilda’s girls are articulate, courageous and compassionate as leaders and contributors to their communities.
Hilda’s life teaches us that true leadership is about serving others, making thoughtful decisions, and fostering harmony within the community. Her deep faith and dedication to God was evident in her every action and her humility, her care for the poor, and support for the marginalised continues to inspire our community to engage in acts of kindness and service as we live our values with conviction.
I would like to acknowledge and thank the St Hilda’s School Old Girls who joined us to celebrate St Hilda today. These intergenerational connections inspire our St Hilda’s girls of today through lived examples of inspiring women, St Hilda’s girls, who lead, serve and influence through making positive changes in the community. This supports our girls to aspire towards their dreams and ambitions, not for themselves alone in keeping with the enduring spirit of our Patron Saint, St Hilda of Whitby.
Gala Concert
The annual St Hilda’s School Gala Concert at the Annand Theatre last Friday night was an incredible evening of performance involving our students from Prep through to Year 12. Inspired by our Senior Prefects' motto, "All For One, One For All", the entire community of St Hilda’s School embraced the Gala theme 'Together,'. The evening showcased the talents of over 300 performers from Prep to Year 12 (and our wonderful Staff band!). I commend our performers for the many hours of hard work, organisation and rehearsal time dedicated to their musical pursuits, and hope that they relished the captive, appreciative audience in the Annand Theatre. My sincere gratitude to all involved – the collective team efforts of the Music faculty, our musicians across all year levels and our parent volunteer groups, families and staff who made this magnificent evening possible.
Fete and Festival of the Arts
We have reached the two week countdown to our St Hilda’s School Community Fete and Festival of the Arts! I eagerly anticipate attending my first St Hilda’s Fete and feel very blessed to be a part of this generous community. Having previewed some of the exceptional artworks for the Festival of the Arts and taken part in the planning meetings, it is sure to be a fabulous time for all. I look forward to connecting with many of you at the Festival of the Arts Cocktail Party on the evening of Friday, 2 August in the Granowski Building, and at the Fete on Saturday, 3 August commencing at 12pm.
Andrews Cup, QGSSSA and BSRA Rowing
Camaraderie and teamwork were on display as QGSSSA Winter Fixtures kicked off for Senior School students last week, with Netball, Tennis and Volleyball home games against St Peter’s Lutheran College. In the Andrews Cup Competition, our Junior girls also have a busy term ahead, with competitions in Football, Athletics and Basketball.
The Blessing of the Fleet last Saturday signified the official commencement of our BSRA Rowing Season and we look to the regattas ahead with great anticipation and optimism. I have been inspired by the dedication our Rowing community in its entirety has shown in the lead-up – the early mornings, holiday camps, RSG breakfasts, and the many hours dedicated to achieving our best on the water. Our rowers and indeed all of our athletes look forward to many members of our community coming out to support them throughout their season.
What a blessing it is to have so much to celebrate at St Hilda’s. I look forward to our community getting behind our St Hilda’s girls throughout the term ahead, whether they are performing on the stage, in the water or on the sporting fields.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
